ORPHEUS & EURYDICE: a great and terrible love story in Ancient Greece...
Orpheus was infinitely in love with his wife, the very beautiful Eurydice, but she died bitten by a snake. Distraught, he goes into the domain of the Gods, and to God Hades who reigns over the underworld where the dead go. Hades' domain includes “The Hells” (where those who are to be punished go) and “The Champs Elysees” (a pleasant place of postmortem life for those who are rewarded). Orpheus begs Hades to give him Eurydice back. The Goddess Proserpine, the wife of Hades, moved by such a great love, convinces her husband to accept Orpheus’s request. But, Hades, accepts on the condition that Orpheus does not turn around to look at Eurydice as they travel out of the underworld on the path to the world of the living.
